****************************************************** Hopefully, these familiar Lenten Sunday Scriptures will spark the motivation within us to change our lives in a way that that matters to God. The Genesis story of Adam and Eve clearly identifies what the serpent says and the half-truth it was, although it was not perceived that way by either Eve or Adam. It was true that they would know both good and evil… but, unfortunately for them in a way just known to God but hidden to them, about the devastating consequences of disobedience and thinking their choice (sin) was better than the good advice and warning of their Creator.
The second reading from the Letter to the Romans explains the roles of Adam and Jesus in salvation history. Adam and Eve certainly made a mess of things, but so do we at times. They could not “undo” the sin or its offense personally or for the rest of humanity. The incredible gift that Jesus gave us not only obliterates the deserved punishment but provides an eternal reward beyond what we can even imagine!
The Gospel account of the Temptations of Jesus according to Matthew is about all of us. Jesus was fully human and was tempted by human needs for food/ pleasure, reassurance, and the need for success/power. Jesus relied on Old Testament Scripture to counter these half-truth temptations and did not deny the Father‘s goodness, Providence, and ultimate power to triumph over sin and death, however.
We simply cannot trust Satan or even ourselves alone to proceed in the correct direction to claim Jesus’s victory ... we need help! What is it in our life that we gravitate towards that tempts us to miss Who our Triune God is, to us and for us? Whatever that is should be the target that we ask for Divine Guidance to deny and replace with all things Divine. God is all-knowing, all -loving, and all-powerful. That unique combination is greater than anything we can possibly imagine and can master/overcome anything and everything that conflicts with It. Let that statement of praise be our mantra this Lent!
Blessings, Dr. Lanie LeBlanc OP Southern Dominican Laity
