Each week we are posting General Intercessions for the upcoming Sunday liturgies by Msgr. Joseph Masiello, retired pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, Westfield, NJ.  These intercessions are based on the assigned scriptures, the liturgical season and current events.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

CELEBRANT: Having been reminded of the things that truly matter, let us, who are one in Christ, who is all and in all, make intercession for the needs of the Church and of the world.

READER: Please respond, “LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!”

1. That Pope Francis, his brother Bishops, the clergy, and all God’s people may be intent on things that matter to our God rather than on the passing things of earth and the idolatry of greed, we pray...

2. That world leaders may labor mightily for an end to war and to violence of every kind, we pray...

3. That the richer nations of the planet may cooperate to meet the needs of the world’s millions of poor and hungry, and work together to address with urgency the ever-increasing disastrous effects of climate change, we pray...

4. That government and society may lift up in hope those who know too well that life is not fair, whose plans are frustrated, whose contentment is brief, especially refugees seeking asylum from violence, we pray...

5. That our First Responders and our service men and women may be blessed with safety, and that there may be an increase in vocations to the priesthood and the religious life for the sake of the believing community, we pray...

6. That the seriously ill in our community and among our family members and friends may be gifted with the comfort of loved ones and the healing touch of our God, (especially ___________), we pray...

7. That Easter’s glorious hope may wrap the hearts of those among us mourning loved ones; and ____________, (and) all our beloved dead rest in the eternal embrace of God’s love and peace, we pray...

8. We pause to express, in the silence of our hearts, our personal intentions -

                                        (PAUSE)

That our God may receive with kindness those unspoken concerns, we pray...

CELEBRANT: God of love, teach us how to put to death the less than holy in our lives.  Set our hearts on the higher realms, and help us to live lives of holy stewardship and humble generosity.  We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
